I wish I had read Proud: Living My American Dream earlier. This inspiring memoir by Ibtihaj Muhammad, the Olympic fencer, activist, author, and modest clothing designer, is filled with so much heart. After reading this, I felt a strong connection to her and her story of determination as the only Black Muslim in her community, and how she rose above hate and other obstacles on her path to pursue her dreams.
She has an aura of being a wise older sister, inviting you in and putting you under her wing as she shares her journey through life and fencing. Like many Muslim children, she faced discrimination and bullying, but she always managed to smile, let her kindness shine through, and ultimately rise above the adversity. She possesses a remarkable spark and determination to excel. I enjoyed reading how she explained her training routines, how she learned from the best, and aspired to compete against top athletes. Even when she faced defeat, she understood that it was part of the learning and growing process.
The book also showcased exemplary parenting and mentorship. Her parents were firm but loving, and they encouraged her to become the best version of herself. When things got tough for Ibtihaj, her parents would remind her of how her ancestors persevered, emphasizing that she could not give up on that legacy. I was also inspired by the coaches, who taught and motivated her, recognizing her potential and drawing it out.
The storytelling was very engaging. It didn’t necessarily feel like a traditional autobiography or memoir, instead it included dialogue and anecdotes that made it captivating and page-turning. Her picture books are also very charming and I recommend those as well.
I truly believe this book is a must-have and a must-read for Muslim girls and women. It made me incredibly proud. You can really see Ibtihaj’s great character and kindness in her writing. The book reads like a motivational speech, so be sure to grab your highlighter and take some notes!
